You¡¯ve been around Synthesis Teams long enough to know that good
communication means more than just talking to your teammates.
It¡¯s about being thoughtful in the
way we communicate: using
teammates¡¯ names, being clear and specific, and asking clarifying
questions. It¡¯s about speaking up
and responding to others.
This month, we¡¯ll take a closer look at these important aspects of
teamwork as we examine your
productive communication skills.
Ethan, here's what we observed about your teamwork skills during the session: One thing you did especially well was using clear and direct language to convey your ideas. Your statements like "Let's use the teleporter" and "We need batteries" show that you understand the importance of being specific, which helps your teammates know exactly what needs to be done. Another great thing we noticed was your use of humor and encouragement, such as saying, "Good job, guys!" which can lift team spirits and make playing more fun for everyone. One way to grow even more is to work on reducing repetition and interruptions during conversations. This will help maintain a steady flow of dialogue and give your teammates more opportunities to share their thoughts, creating a balanced and inclusive team environment. Why is this important? Clear and focused communication helps a team work smoothly and efficiently, leading to better collaboration and success in the game. Keep up the great work, and continue practicing these skills!
Observations based on your participation in Play sessions in 3 of the past 4 weeks.
On your journey to make any team you join better, you'll practice how to effectively communicate with everyone. Our Discussion sessions are carefully designed to provide opportunities for you to practice these critical communication skills in various ways.
Last week's theme was
"Life on Mars."
The possibility of interplanetary human life is closer than ever. And with that possibility come the hard questions: the risks, trade-offs, and opportunities. We asked students to work through six of those, from the use of water to the need for security. No right or wrong answers, but in putting their minds to the problems of a Martian future, students strengthened their ability to solve the problems of the present, right here on Earth.

Reflection for Ethan: What does balanced communication look like?
Ethan, here¡¯s what we noticed about your communication during last week¡¯s Discussion session: One thing you did especially well was participating actively and sharing your thoughts, as seen when you said, ¡°It's difficult to mark the soil I think. Or like...¡± This shows you have great ideas to contribute to the group. However, finishing your thoughts clearly can help your teammates fully understand your insights. You might try making sure to complete your sentences, which can make your contributions even more impactful. Another area for growth is using your teammates¡¯ names when responding, which can help create a more personalized and connected conversation. Keep up the active participation, and remember that clearly expressing your ideas can make your voice even stronger!
Anyone who's on the path toward becoming a Supercollaborator is able to keep improving their skills and making course corrections. We look forward to seeing you at future Play + Discussion sessions, and we'll continue giving you feedback on your teamwork and communication skills.
