TEAMWORK METRICS

This week in Play, the Polis Prize is up for grabs, but that's not all that's on the line.

The bigger question is about team cohesion, especially when the stakes are high. What makes effective teams . . . effective? How do you respond under stress?

Be sure to check out the Synthesis Mission Brief for more details.

TEAMWORK ANALYSIS

You¡¯ve been around Synthesis Teams long enough to know that good communication means more than just talking to your teammates.

It¡¯s about being thoughtful in the way we communicate: using teammates¡¯ names, being clear and specific, and asking clarifying questions. It¡¯s about speaking up and responding to others.

This month, we¡¯ll take a closer look at these important aspects of teamwork as we examine your productive communication skills.

We¡¯ve missed you in Play sessions the past few weeks! We know that schedules can change, and we hope that we¡¯ll see you in Play again soon. In the meantime, have you checked out your portfolio progress in your student portal recently? Click on the ¡®portfolio¡¯ tile to see a list of the achievements you¡¯ve unlocked. And be sure to watch this week¡¯s Mission Brief for a preview of what to expect in Play!

COMMUNICATION METRICS

On your journey to make any team you join better, you'll practice how to effectively communicate with everyone. Our Discussion sessions are carefully designed to provide opportunities for you to practice these critical communication skills in various ways.

Last week's theme was "Governance of Thebes." We brought Polis into the ¡°polis,¡± as students examined tough, hypothetical choices for ancient Thebes: health or education, local control or city-wide plans. Students had to wrestle with big questions about fairness and responsibility ¡ª just like real leaders do.

No right or wrong answers. Just interesting conversations with kids from around the world.

COMMUNICATION ANALYSIS

Productive communication and effective teamwork go hand in hand. Because you were unable to attend a Discussion session last week, we can¡¯t provide a current analysis of your strengths and areas for growth in your communication skills. To ensure our feedback is timely and relevant, we focus on your most recent conversations during Discussions. In Discussion sessions, you¡¯ll learn how to craft an educated opinion and express it civilly to peers from around the globe. We encourage you to attend upcoming sessions so we can help you develop your communication skills further. This week¡¯s theme is ¡°Athena vs. Demeter.¡± What matters more: stability or ambition? This week, Synthesis students explore this timeless question using two ancient Greek archetypes: Demeter and Athena. The ¡°Demeter Path¡± represents focusing on essentials like food and self-reliance, while the ¡°Athena Path¡± pushes for innovation and future goals. This essential conflict has challenged societies for centuries. Which path will students choose for the city of Thebes? The scenarios may be set two thousand years ago, but the concepts echo through history ¡ª even today. No right or wrong answers. Just interesting conversations with kids from around the world.

Anyone who's on the path toward becoming a Supercollaborator is able to keep improving their skills and making course corrections. We look forward to seeing you at future Play + Discussion sessions, and we'll continue giving you feedback on your teamwork and communication skills.
