TEAMWORK METRICS

The theme this week ¡ª in both Play and Discussions ¡ª is all about competing roles. We are all asked to be different people in different situations, so how and when do we decide which of our various roles to prioritize? In Play, you're an individual student playing as a member of a team, but you're also a representative of a planet and part of the Synthesis community as a whole. Which role do you put first, and why?

Be sure to check out the Synthesis Mission Brief for more details.

TEAMWORK ANALYSIS

You¡¯ve been around Synthesis Teams long enough to know that good communication means more than just talking to your teammates.

It¡¯s about being thoughtful in the way we communicate: using teammates¡¯ names, being clear and specific, and asking clarifying questions. It¡¯s about speaking up and responding to others.

This month, we¡¯ll take a closer look at these important aspects of teamwork as we examine your productive communication skills.

Chenjun, here's what we observed about your teamwork skills during Play: One thing you did especially well was keeping your team up to date regarding its available resources like when you said, "We have so many money to buy." You also demonstrated your willingness to collaborate and help your teammates with, ¡°Who wants an Eden satellite?¡± which demonstrated your ability to work well with your teammates. Focusing on building clearer communication would be a great next step for you. Try to expand on your thoughts when talking with your teammates, as brief or unclear statements sometimes left your intentions open to interpretation and could confuse others. Why is this important? Clear communication helps ensure everyone understands each other, making teamwork more effective and enjoyable. Keep up the enthusiasm, and remember that practice makes perfect!

Observations based on your participation in Play sessions in 4 of the past 4 weeks.

COMMUNICATION METRICS

On your journey to make any team you join better, you'll practice how to effectively communicate with everyone. Our Discussion sessions are carefully designed to provide opportunities for you to practice these critical communication skills in various ways.

Last week's theme was "Challenge vs. Comfort." Life often presents our kids with choices between the easy and the hard path¡ªa crossroads where comfort meets challenge. The easy path is like a gentle stream: predictable and safe, but rarely leading to greatness. The hard path is like a mountain trail: steep and demanding, but offering a spectacular view. Sometimes, the easy way is wisdom; sometimes, it¡¯s an escape. And sometimes, it¡¯s the extra effort that creates outstanding outcomes. Choosing between these two defines who students will become and what they¡¯ll value ¡ª and last week¡¯s session gave us an early glimpse into that process.

COMMUNICATION ANALYSIS

Chenjun, here¡¯s what we noticed about your communication during last week¡¯s Discussion session: One thing you did especially well was adding your thoughts and ideas to the topic of conversation, such as when you said, "Do you want to choose challenge and or comfort because I'm going to choose comfort," which showed a willingness to engage. It's also great that you often affirm others with responses like "I agree," showing respect for your teammates' thoughts. To keep building your skills, you might try inviting others to build on their ideas, helping strengthen the conversation's flow. For example, after agreeing, you could ask, ¡°What do you think about that, [teammate¡¯s name]?¡± This will help make sure everyone feels connected and build a more seamless discussion.

Anyone who's on the path toward becoming a Supercollaborator is able to keep improving their skills and making course corrections. We look forward to seeing you at future Play + Discussion sessions, and we'll continue giving you feedback on your teamwork and communication skills.
