Hi Charley,

On the journey to make any team you¡¯re on better, you¡¯ll practice how to effectively communicate with everyone. Our Discussion Sessions are carefully designed to provide opportunities for you to practice these critical communication skills in various ways. Last week, you explored dilemmas in empathy and considered the question, "Should we always help others, or are there scenarios in which one's individual needs are more important?"

Here¡¯s some feedback on how you used your voice in the Discussion Sessions you attended:

Communication Analysis
Charley, during the recent Discussion sessions we made some observations we would like to share with you about your communication abilities.

We appreciate your efforts to simplify complex scenarios for your peers, notably your clear presentation of different options. This approach helps to establish a strong direction for the discussion. However, we noticed occasional moments where your contributions could benefit from greater brevity, as reflected in some repetitive statements. Thus, focusing on being more succinct would enhance the effectiveness of your communication. On the other hand, you excel in asking open-ended questions like ¡°But will you need or feel uncomfortable or embarrassed in a situation?¡± that guide your teammates to think critically and explore the topic in-depth.

In terms of attentive interaction with others' input, you are doing quite well. You actively engage in the conversation, showing that you value your teammates' ideas by acknowledging and encouraging them with comments like "What do you guys think?" Since your previous session, you've continued to use questions to gently push the discussion forward, which is a strong suit of yours. In terms of acknowledging the value of your teammates' perspectives, remember to more consistently respond to their ideas. While you sometimes recognize the complexity of views presented, such as acknowledging alternative risks and rewards, more direct engagement with your peers' specific comments could offer a richer exchange of ideas.

Lastly, your capacity for empathy and perspective-taking is evident in how you navigate moral considerations within your discussions. Your questions often reflect an understanding of the characters¡¯ feelings, encouraging others to think from different angles. Statements such as "So maybe, um, A?" suggest that you are weighing options with sensibility. There is room for growth in this area, though, by consistently considering the impact of decisions on all involved to demonstrate a fuller extent of empathy. Perhaps focusing on expressing these considerations in a clearer, more concise manner, akin to previous discussions where you used definitive language effectively, would allow you to lead with a more comprehensive and inclusive perspective.

Anyone who knows how to make any team they¡¯re on better is able to keep improving their skills and correcting their errors. We look forward to seeing you at future Discussion Sessions and we¡¯ll continue giving you feedback on how you¡¯ve progressed in using your voice.
