Hi Lufei,

On the journey to make any team you¡¯re on better, you¡¯ll practice how to effectively communicate with everyone. Our Discussion Sessions are carefully designed to provide opportunities for you to practice these critical communication skills in various ways. Last week, you explored dilemmas in empathy and considered the question, "Should we always help others, or are there scenarios in which one's individual needs are more important?"

Here¡¯s some feedback on how you used your voice in the Discussion Sessions you attended:

Communication Analysis
Lufei, during the recent Discussion sessions we made some observations we would like to share with you about your communication abilities.

Your ability to participate with brevity is evident, but at times, your contributions can benefit from greater focus and elaboration to enhance clarity. Phrases like, "I stuck and then stuck and then when I stuck more I stuck out," tend to be unclear and less constructive to the conversation. By providing clearer context and maintaining relevance to the session's topic, you could convey your ideas more effectively. For example, instead of saying "No, I won't because you know..." strive to articulate your argument concisely and directly to make your point understood. From your interaction in the sessions, you've acknowledged your peers with phrases such as ¡°Yeah,¡± which indicates you're actively present; however, deepening your engagement by directly responding to their statements will demonstrate that you've fully grasped the content they've shared.

Your questions sometimes spark engagement, like when you asked, "What do you think A,B or C?," which effectively encouraged a discussion. Increasing the frequency and focus of such questions would prove beneficial for a deeper exploration of ideas. Comparatively, your previous session reflected a curiosity towards your teammates' lives with questions like, "Do any of you have a pet?" Yet, aligning these inquiries more closely with the heart of the discussion can lead to richer insights and a more impactful discussion.

Lastly, your expressions of empathy, such as when you connected with peers¡¯ experiences by saying, "uncomfortable like I have been uncomfortable and I don¡¯t like it," show a foundation for emotional understanding. This skill is crucial in building a supportive and empathetic group atmosphere. To improve, intentionally integrating your peers' perspectives into your responses and elaborating on statements like "Hey, why did you leave? We just got like five more minutes,¡± can display a more considerate viewpoint and enhance your connections during discussions.

Anyone who knows how to make any team they¡¯re on better is able to keep improving their skills and correcting their errors. We look forward to seeing you at future Discussion Sessions and we¡¯ll continue giving you feedback on how you¡¯ve progressed in using your voice.
