Hi Charley,

On the journey to make any team you¡¯re on better, you¡¯ll practice how to effectively communicate with everyone. Our Discussion Sessions are carefully designed to provide opportunities for you to practice these critical communication skills in various ways. Last week, we challenged you to find the root of the issues. Rather than taking a position on a scenario, students decided on the essential question at the heart of each one. No right or wrong answers, just interesting conversations with kids from around the world.

Here¡¯s some feedback on how you used your voice in the Discussion Sessions you attended:

Communication Analysis
Charley, during the recent Discussion sessions we made some observations we would like to share with you about your communication abilities.

Firstly, your role as a leader in discussions is clearly marked by your thoughtful and extended discourse on topics ranging from astronauts' decision-making to the ethics of AI in legal circumstances. Your ability to provide clear and thorough explanations aids in structuring conversations, as observed when you elaborated on the potential consequences of astronaut decisions, enhancing the group's understanding of various implications. However, while your detailed contributions are informative, they can sometimes extend into verbosity which may burden the discussion flow. For instance, lengthy monologues might impinge on the involvement of others, as seen in your detailed evaluations that occasionally overshadow shorter contributions from teammates. Streamlining your contributions can help maintain a balance in group interactions.

Your listening skills are commendable. You routinely integrate ideas from your teammates into your responses, which is a critical aspect of communication. This was particularly evident when you synthesized group thoughts around human safety and exploration, indicating not only your attentiveness but also your ability to construct a cohesive summary of diverse viewpoints. Despite this strength, there is an opportunity to expand on this by not only synthesizing but also by encouraging quieter teammates to voice their thoughts, thereby strengthening the collective output.

Lastly, your questioning technique continues to be a strong aspect of your communication, effectively fostering deeper exploration of topics among your peers. Questions like, ¡°Should we finish what we start? Which of these is the root of this issue?¡± highlight your ability to guide the group toward fundamental insights. This aligns well with previous observations where your aptitude for raising pertinent inquiries advanced the analytical depth of conversations. Moreover, the consistent integration of ethical perspectives particularly when prioritizing human elements over scientific achievements, denotes a mature consideration of discussion topics. Continuing to combine these questioning strategies with concise statements will further enhance the productivity and inclusivity of your discourse in group settings.

Anyone who knows how to make any team they¡¯re on better is able to keep improving their skills and correcting their errors. We look forward to seeing you at future Discussion Sessions and we¡¯ll continue giving you feedback on how you¡¯ve progressed in using your voice.
