Synthesis Week 10/21

This week’s Synthesis lessons take students through interactive experiences focused on learning the distributive property of multiplication and the importance of teamwork. In the Tutor lesson, students will master breaking down and reassembling equations with the “Dot Distributor.” In the Polis game, teams will face the challenge of aligning priorities to succeed. Lastly, the discussion session will explore how to choose the right communication method for different situations.

Teams that pull in the same direction are, generally speaking, more effective and more successful. But that’s not always easy. This week, Polis maps will intentionally pull teams in different directions. And not only that. There are also differing priorities: the Polis Prize (a priority for community pride); leaderboard achievements (a priority for individuals); and effective strategy (a priority for teams). The game? It’s Polis. The game above the game? It’s figuring out how to align team interests in a short time frame. And it’s another chance to practice the most important skills in life.

Synthesis is a place to improve communication. And sometimes, it’s the method that matters. A phone call is different than a handwritten note. A text message is different than a social media post. So what’s the right way to communicate the right message for the right situation? The answer, of course, is that “it depends.” What it depends on, however, is up for discussion. No right or wrong answers here, just interesting conversations with kids from around the world.
