Synthesis Week 11/4

This week, Synthesis lessons will help students strengthen their division fluency with the “Flashcard Frenzy” game and experience the dual impacts of strategies in the upgraded “Batteries Not Included” game. Additionally, the discussion session will lead students to explore ethical issues in robot-human relations, inspired by Asimov’s classic work I, Robot.

We’re excited for students to experience Version 2.0 of Batteries Not Included. The upgrade? A secondary level of consequences for the strategies teams deploy. That means that teams will face two types of decisions: the short-term (reacting to the strategy of the supercomputer); and the long-term (anticipating the consequences of deploying one upgraded virus over another). But first, they’ll need to figure out how this new upgrade works. And remember, if your student wants more chances to tinker with this problem, we’re hosting FREE EXTRA SESSIONS during the weekend of November 29th.

As students face off against a supercomputer in Batteries Not Included, our discussion this week turns to the same topic. Isaac Asimov wrote I, Robot almost 75 years ago. The premise: robots must follow rules to protect humans and themselves. The problem: sometimes, robots get confused. This week’s conversation is inspired by Asimov’s work. Each scenario imagines an ethical decision around robot-human relations. Of course, there are no right or wrong answers. It’s just science fiction. For now.
