This week’s Synthesis lessons challenge students’ insight and decision-making skills through the Proxima game and a discussion about a Martian future. In Proxima, students will strive to earn recognition from teammates, learning how to be a dependable and supportive member of the team. In the discussion session, students will tackle real-world issues of establishing life on Mars, strengthening their ability to solve problems here on Earth. Meanwhile, the Tutor’s new lesson, “Distributor Playground,” offers hands-on exploration of the distributive property in multiplication, sparking curiosity and building confidence through interactive features.

Endorsements are a feature at Synthesis that students are beginning to understand. They’re not the same as social media “likes” — endorsements are more rare, more valuable, and harder to achieve. That’s because to earn an endorsement from a teammate, a player has to stand out as the most supportive, dependable, or insightful. It’s more like Employee of the Week, but given out by co-workers. Does the absence of endorsements mean those qualities are lacking? No. Will endorsements incentivize students to stretch their skills in hopes of achieving one? Yes. If your student gets even one endorsement, that’s a big deal. Because it’s one thing to see growth in ourselves — it’s another when others recognize it in us.

The reality of interplanetary human life is closer than ever. And with that reality comes the hard questions, the risks, the tradeoffs, the benefits, and the opportunities. This week, students work through six of them, from the use of water to the necessity of security. Of course, there can be no right or wrong answers. Yet, in putting their minds to the problems of a Martian future, students are strengthening their ability to solve the problems of the present, right here on Earth.
