Synthesis Week 9/16

The primary skills trained this week: insight, support, and dependability. At Synthesis, students can use the new “endorsement” function in the “Proxima” competition to practice these important qualities. They think about the core skills for team success. By giving endorsements to their teammates for insight, support, or dependability, they continuously improve self-awareness and teamwork ability. At the same time, in the paradox discussion, children are exposed to Fermi’s paradox and others, exploring how to hold contradictory viewpoints simultaneously and cultivating a more flexible and diverse way of thinking, embarking on a learning journey full of challenges and growth.

Proxima

What are the core skills that make any team successful? It’s a question we ask students to think about each week at Synthesis. And for the first time, students have a systematic way to recognize these skills in each other. At the end of select sessions, students will be able to give endorsements to their teammates for being insightful, supportive, or dependable. Over the next months, you’ll see how those endorsements stack up for your child. That’s because Synthesis is more than a game. It’s a training ground for the skills that matter most.

Post-play

Here are some follow-up reflection questions, in case you’d like to discuss the experience with your child.

Between the qualities of being insightful, supportive, or dependable, which do you think is the most important for a team’s success?
Of those three, which one do you feel best matches you? Which one do you need to grow in the most?

Paradox

For kids accustomed to clear answers, the Fermi Paradox can be confusing: if the universe is vast, the likelihood of alien civilization is high; but if the likelihood is high, why has there been zero evidence of alien civilization? How can two opposing viewpoints be equally valid? This week, we created six student-friendly paradoxes to familiarize kids with how to hold contradictory ideas simultaneously. What we expect: some students will still lean towards finding “right and wrong” in each paradox. What we hope: some students will achieve the enigmatic clarity of “both and neither.”
