This week, Synthesis lessons guide students through exploration and critical thinking across multiple dimensions. In the Proxima game, teams will enhance their teamwork and collaboration skills under pressure through the “speedrun” challenge. In the new lesson “Difference Dimension,” students embark on an intergalactic adventure, balancing energy blocks to understand differences between values, building confidence in comparison and subtraction. Meanwhile, the discussion session focuses on the social and ethical dilemmas of social media, encouraging students to consider its potential positive and negative impacts. These activities aim to help students strengthen their teamwork, mathematical understanding, and critical thinking skills, laying a solid foundation for future challenges.

A “speedrun” measures how quickly a team can complete a challenge. To win quickly means effective teamwork, clear communication, and insightful strategy. Teams can play the same map again and again, improving each time. Or, they can move ahead to the next map and start over. The goal? Get your team on the leaderboard. But there’s a counterforce to this challenge: when the stakes are high, tensions rise, and team cohesion can break apart. Therefore, coaches will be helping teams work on prioritizing their teammates in order to prioritize their efficiency. Not an easy task, but a great practice to start early.

Back by popular demand, a conversation with kids about social media — a force with the potential for both positive and negative consequences. Of course, this session won’t take sides. If and how your family chooses to interact with social media is up to you. Instead, the discussion will center around the social and ethical quandaries of this relatively new form of communication: real vs. ideal; education vs. distraction; reputation vs. character. Because regardless of how relevant they think social media actually is, it’s always relevant to talk about the implications of technology.

In this intergalactic adventure, your child will take command of a showdown between alien empires. By stacking and balancing energy blocks, they’ll uncover the “extra” or “missing” amounts between values. Along the way, they’ll make key connections between finding the difference and subtraction, building confidence in comparison. You can find “Difference Dimension” in the Addition and Subtraction Unit.
