This week, Synthesis lessons focus on helping students understand and navigate the concept of fairness through games and discussions. In Hyperball, students will face unfair conditions, learning to adjust their mindset when at a disadvantage. In the discussion session, they’ll explore how fairness manifests in different contexts. Additionally, the Tutor’s new lesson “Subtraction Blaster” offers engaging challenges to strengthen subtraction skills.

Life isn’t always fair. And while unfair situations can be hard for kids, they’re also bound to encounter them in their future. And that means we can practice dealing with them now, in a controlled and coachable environment. This week, therefore, teams will face intentionally unfair playing conditions. The question: as a teammate, how do you respond when the balance is tipped against you? As a problem-solver, how do you adjust your mindset when you know you’re at a disadvantage? Over time, these skills strengthen your child’s ability to handle adversity and grow into a confident and compassionate individual.

We’ll continue the conversation about fairness into this week’s Discussion session. In games, fairness means both teams have the same opportunity to succeed. In discussions, there are no teams. But there can still be fairness. As part of this week’s conversation, students will work to make sure all their team members have the opportunity to contribute. As always, there are no right or wrong answers. But even so, there should be a fair chance for everyone to share their opinions.
