Details

For the last few weeks, students have worked on helping their planet compete against the other Synthesis planets. But not all problems in life are competitive. Sometimes, teams, businesses, and even nations must band together against a common obstacle. And that’s the next big challenge for students of the Synthesis universe: for the first time, the houses of Atlantis, Silvana, and Astra will work together in a collaborative Proxima challenge against an alien blight that threatens to infect the universe.

What’s at stake for these teams? All of the trophies they’ve won so far. This week, they prepare. Next week, they perform. The lesson here is one that applies beyond Synthesis — there are times to compete, and there are times to come together; knowing when to do which is the hard part.

Post-play

Here are some follow-up reflection questions, in case you’d like to discuss the experience with your child.

Was there a difference in playing with (instead of against) members of the other Synthesis planets? If so, what? If not, why not?
Are the skills needed to be effective in Polis the same skills needed to be effective in Proxima? Why or why not?

Discussions

Point Counterpoint

Strategic discussions aren’t always about having the right answer. They’re also about sharing ideas, and all big ideas have at least two sides: the point and the counterpoint. Of course, having a point and counterpoint doesn’t mean there’s an argument. Good thinkers consider counterpoints to their own ideas to make sure that all sides are considered.

In this week’s scenarios, students will make two separate decisions: 1) what’s the best point? 2) does that point hold up to its counterpoint? After all, conversations aren’t competitions — they’re a collaborative exercise in thinking critically, even if that means reversing course.

Either way, there are no right or wrong answers, just interesting conversations with kids from around the world.
