Natural Election is a game with a focus on negotiation. Teams can send “ambassadors” into a separate room to negotiate for information key to their strategy. But the question remains: how do they know they can trust the information you get? This week’s session, therefore, is about the difference between good faith negotiation (honesty, respect, compromise) and bad faith negotiation (deceit, selfishness, inflexibility). But here’s the conundrum: both types of negotiation can lead to a victory. So the real question is this: What kind of team do you want to be? What kind of person do you want to be? Are there “bad wins” and “good losses”? These are consequential decisions that your student can grapple with on the safe playing field of Synthesis.

Typically, we think of winning as a success and losing as a failure. However, not all wins and losses are that straightforward. A “bad win” occurs when a victory is achieved through unethical behavior or poor performance. On the other hand, a “good loss” happens when the experience ends with valuable lessons or personal growth, even if the final outcome isn’t a win. This week, students discuss how different situations can lead to either a bad win or a good loss, weighing the importance of process, integrity, and learning from experiences. No right or wrong answers, just interesting conversation with kids from around the world.
